The UNESCO has declared that both Fuerteventura as Gerês-Xurés are biosphere
reserves. Both sites of outstanding natural beauty now have legal protection
towards the conservation of biodiversity.
UNESCO has designated as "biosphere reserve" some 533 natural areas. 40 of them
are located in Spain. This international corporation has recently decided to
incorporate into your list 22 other sites, including two Spanish sites.
Fuerteventura in the archipelago of the Canaries is one of the sites selected.
Here coexist diverse ecosystems and a wide variety of fauna and flora.
Fuerteventura depends exclusively on tourism and this is also one reason why the
UNESCO wants to collaborate in the conservation of original natural conditions.
The other sites selected by UNESCO
Gerês-Xurés receives input from both countries for their maintenance and preservation, and now has the protection of UNESCO.
